Hey there! Here’s a LONG OVERDUE update from yours truly, Cady McClain!
As some of you know, I’ve been working really hard on this documentary series called “Seeing is Believing: Women Direct,” all about women who direct film and television. It’s been a constant inspiration (and perspiration) to shoot, interview, and then edit these interviews with amazing women directors (who we will someday refer to as just “directors” I am SURE). If you’ve made it to one of our festival screenings, I think you might agree that their stories are pretty uplifting!
I could spend all day working on this project, but I decided that if I were going to be a director myself, then directing was what was going to have to get busy doing! I knew I needed to do it to give me the insight to create the documentary properly, but I also had to make sure that I kept growing creatively. So over the last two years while shooting over 50 interviews with women directors of all walks of life, I’ve also shot….
…two different productions of “Venice the Series” for which I was thrilled to be a recipient of an Emmy nomination!
Then …. I directed the trailer for a beautiful short film called “Butterflies” by a talented young woman named Carlotta Summers, followed by the short film itself, which we are now editing! I also directed a short film called “The Missing Piece” for an organization called Kids in the Spotlight that benefits foster kids who’ve been in over 20 homes each (wow).
I’ve also LOVED hosting and being interviewed on the topic of women who direct. This spring I was invited to talk at the WEHO Women and Leadership Conference with some amazingly fabulous females like Marianna Palka, Finola Hughes, Li Lu, and Grace Lee.
The 28 minute version of “Seeing is Believing: Women Direct” won a Jury Prize in the Best Documentary Short category in it’s FIRST festival: The Newport Beach Film Festival! It’s screening next at the Burbank Film Festival, followed by the Catalina Film Festival. I am really happy about this!
The 60 minute version of “Seeing is Believing: Women Direct’ won the AUDIENCE AWARD for Best Feature at the SOHO International Film Festival, which was incredibly thrilling. I was pretty exhausted by the time the award ceremony came around, but really grateful. It was a lot of work to get there!
We’ve been featured in Salon, Women and Hollywood, IndieWire, AND I got interviewed for LaART on PBS SoCal! How cool is that?? Check out the film’s website here: seeingisbelievingwomendirect.com We’ve got blogs, more press, GIFS, and more coming!
To say my plate has been full would be a ridiculous understatement. But it has all been thrilling. To be able to continue to stretch and grow my vision and ability as a director has been worth every long day, even every new wrinkle on my forehead! I’m really excited about these next projects coming up. I have so much to share with you!
Thank you for coming on all these adventures with me. I am so grateful for your support!
