“Whispering Hearts: A Comic Book Begins its Journey!

Posted on: June 8, 2012

So the other day I was sitting at my computer checking out my Facebook page when I saw a message from a place called “Mansion Comics.”  I thought, hmm… this looks interesting.  I’ve been a comic book fan for many years.  Superwomen comics were a huge part of my childhood.  I must have dragged that compilation of Stan Lee’s Superhero Women of Marvel around to every room in the house.

So when I saw the message from a comic book company, I must say I sat right up and paid attention.  His message was simple, “Do you want to be in a comic book I’m making?” was the jist of it.  What other response would my inner ten year old have but HOLY MACKEREL, MANSION COMICS, YOU BET I DO!”?

It took us a week or two to iron things out, but now I feel confident in sharing that I think this guy has his head screwed on straight.  The idea of a soap comic has been bouncing around for a while.  I even pitched it to ABC back in 2006 along with the blog, but they thought it would be too tricky for some reason, I don’t know.  Now that there IS no All My Children or a whole bunch of other shows, I feel like the ground is really ready for some new seeds.  If we can’t bring back the old shows, perhaps it is time to begin again, and where else does one start but at the beginning?

It’s hard to believe but romance comics pre-date even beat out pulp novels and superhero comics.  Here’s a quote from Ron Goulart in his book “The Great American Comicbook“:

“Romance comics did impressively well commercially, but negatively impacted the sales of superhero comics and confession magazines. True Story admitted their sales were being hurt by the upstart romance comics. In the August 22, 1949 issue of Time, a report indicated that love comics were “outselling all others, even the blood and thunder variety … “

I think there is a good shot that a new romance comic could be a best seller once again, which is only partly why I agreed to allow my likeness to be used as the lead character of Pearl Ainsley in Mansion Comics new romance comic book, “Whispering Hearts.”  It’s just getting off the ground, but you can check out our Kickstarter campaign here:
